Description
Begun in 1872, the Clear Creek narrow gauge historic railroad was the first narrow gauge line to penetrate directly into the Colorado Rockies. Built under Union Pacific sponsorship as the Colorado Central Railroad, the little line later became an important cornerstone of a subsidiary of the larger road--the Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf Railway. After a lengthy receivership during the 1890's, the Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf in turn emerged as a new, independent railroad, the Colorado & Southern. It was under this latter corporate banner that the Clear Creek narrow gauge was to spend the largest part of its existence, and become best known to railroad enthusiasts and history buffs.
