Dantes membership roster, full of nasty little secrets, has been stolen, and four ton members have received blackmail notes sealed with purple wax. Secret agent, Nicolas Wolfe, the Duke of Darkington, must retrieve the roster, a matter of national security, as the Regent is one of the four. The widow, Cesare Marsh, Duchess of Hampton, and part owner of Dantes, is also searching, but disguised as a French courtesan and then as a serving maid. When this duke and duchess meet, all kinds of mischief are possible.
