Description
John Franklin Shafroth ranks among Colorado's most successful politicians. The first person elected to consecutive terms as Colorado's governor, he is also the only Colorado governor ever to serve in both the House of Representatives and the U. S. Senate. As governor, Shofroth battled for progressive causes such as campaign finance reform, coal mine safety, direct election of U.S. senators, and the initiative and referendum. In the Senate he helped establish the Federal Reserve system, crusaded for women's suffrage, championed the rights of Puerto Ricans and Filipinos, and the supported creation of the League of Nations.
